NeoGenesis Capital Launches Fund at the Intersection of Superintelligence and Synthetic Biology for the Age of Living Products

New firm backs companies applying Colossal Biosciences’ programmable biology platform across health, agriculture and conservation

For most of its history, genetic engineering has been slow, narrow and expensive. That is changing as superintelligence and synthetic biology converge. NeoGenesis Capital was created to finance companies building at the intersection of those technologies.

At the heart of the firm’s investment thesis is the programmable biology platform developed by Colossal Biosciences, an American biotechnology and genetic engineering company founded by Ben Lamm and Harvard geneticist George Church, Ph.D. Best known for its de-extinction work, Colossal has developed a platform that can read a genome, use AI to model a desired change, write that change with multiplex editing, grow the organism and scale the process. The company has demonstrated elements of that platform through its work on the dire wolf, the woolly mouse and what it describes as the world’s largest biobank of endangered-species DNA.

NeoGenesis will focus on what the Colossal platform makes possible next. Potential applications include crops that withstand drought and disease, tools that track evolving pathogens, enzymes that break down microplastics and artificial wombs that could help restore endangered species.

“In 2021 I wrote one of the first checks into Colossal because of the brilliance of Professor George Church and Ben Lamm and their extraordinary vision,” said Dr. Diamandis. “What they built along the way matters more than any one species. Biology has become programmable, and the companies built on that platform will define the next few decades, in human health, in food, in the environment. This is the most exciting frontier I have seen in my career. The mammoth was a starting point, what comes next will be world-changing.”

“Biology is the next programmable substrate, and Colossal built the operating system,” said Dr. Psaltis, Co-Founder and Managing Partner. “NeoGenesis is going deep on one platform and financing the companies it gestates. The next decade is about what gets built on it, and who it helps.”

Oliver Trevena joins NeoGenesis Capital as Head of Culture. An entrepreneur, investor, actor and producer, Trevena has invested in and helped build over 30 brands, co-founded Caliwater, and produced films and documentaries globally. Known for his philanthropic work and extensive international network, he will help shape the firm’s cultural identity and strategic relationships.

“I’ve always been passionate about connecting extraordinary people and being part of something that can positively change the world,” said Trevena. “I’m excited to join Peter, Yianni and the NeoGenesis team in bringing groundbreaking innovation and influential minds together to help shape a better future.”
